What Happened?
[Monday]
This week began with an attempt to finalise the website with an upload and configuration of the data search & input e-peripherals. I stumbled over the fact that I have no ASP environment (necessary for easy database connections) on my computer, and this became a thorn in the flesh when it became apparent that the remote server also does not support ASP (Active Server Pages) I then resorted to downloading a trial version of Microsoft Visual Studio & ASP.net and left them downloading for use the following day, Tuesday. Time is now running out an by end of day 3pm Tuesday, I must have finished and begin to test and finalise now. On Wednesday, I must begin User Acceptance Testing and Implementation.
Earlier on the day, we had an opportunity to go and go through one of the leading producing farms which supply the company with milk. I learnt a lot about the milking process, along with the digital processes that both control milking and collect data before dispatching milk produce to the company. It was a big eye opener as it became clear that the produciton processes is well automated from the lowest levels going up, until the milk produce reaches our factory. I found this very enriching. I also found out that the cows are housed, because of the weather, along also with information on how ill livestock is spotted and reported in the database.
Earlier on before this (in the morning) , I attended n invitation to do a talk session with English students at the Kurressaare Ametikool. I learnt a lot about diverse midsets caused by geographical orientation, that is, how a person’s learning can be affecte by their environment. We had a chat which lasted well into the second hour during which time I gave presentation to the class about life in the United Kingdom, while throwing light on how multifaceted and multicultural the country is, while inviting them as well to visit the UK.
I also had a question-and-answer session where they asked me questions such as “What do you do in your spare time? and when did you learn to speak English.” This also was part of the learning substance.
On the weekend, I also made a few friends, who I have been speaking regularly in the Estonian language.
[Tuesday]
ASP.net framework setup failed. I then opted for Creating an interface for editing data in Ajax.
-Upon the advice of an expert based in the US {Massimo Foti massimocorner.com} , I downloaded a new software developed by Adobe called SPRY. This software allows you to Add dynamic regions to nyour webpage that control retrieval and placement of data without any JavaScript or ASP necessities.
- I also downloade Adobe COLDFUSION software, upon the advice of Massimo Foti which works together with SPRY and Dreamweaver CS3

2nd BrickWall: Cold Fusion software failed to load in the way explainedin the Adobe tutorial. BEEN FRUSTRATING!
UPLOADING huge (230MB) database file to server but only hope it will work without hussles and work in time before the completion of the work placement which is now in the next 24 hours!
I worked all the way up to 10PM although with little success on my data connection issues.
Wednesday.
This morning I persued another connection route using Dreamweaver but encountered the same horrible errors of last week.
My supervisor then said to me that since the database connections were failing, that I rather concentrate in fine tuning the web design. She expressed that this was still enough for her. I then sharpened the website’s design and later in the afternoon presented it before her. She expressed satisfaction with it.
However I also added that I would persue the data connections issue in the UK and despite her lack of insistence would still report back as soon as I encounter a breakthrough.
Thursday.
We arrived at the SKYPE offices (headquarters in Tallin) We toured the company’s offices and had a quick peep at its harware equipment. It was a good eye opener. What I learned was that anything in life is possible after hearing that the company is only 6 years old, and yet it is now employing hundreds of employees across the world. This was a real inspiration. The greatest lesson I learnt today was on the issue of rest. I learnt that the company policy is strict on the matter resting and relaxing all rules, they allow their employers to even sleep in the offices if they cannot drive back early. This was a new thing to me but also something which I believe if implemented, will definitely help me in the future. They emphasise that if you are too tired and you have been involved in vigorous brainstorming activity, the best for you is to rest even at work!
What was bad?
Very little time left, and the inadequacy of software resources was a bitter bottleneck.
What could you have done to avoid/improve the situation?
Perhaps vigourous consultation with IT specialists could have helped improve my speed, but this is subject to the availability of their time and tolerance of me! Most of the IT specialists I interact with are inthe US, and their resposnes are often 48 hours away. Although I engaged my tutor, it was hard to obtain his full attention as he was busy teaching almost every day.
He did help me though, for instance in the obtaining of the MS Access software, but even then, it was hard because he only replied me late in the evening, 8PM.
With online forums, it is not difficult to get solutions, but the only important thing is that you need adequate time, to both digest, test and evaluate the solutions before you as not every solution suggested will work, since the prevailing variables can be different with each scenario.
Perhaps also if I had maintained good resting periods like they have emphasised at SKYPE in Tallin, it might have eased up my strain for a solution.
Lastly, I must now create certainty by eliminating all non-working options. There is nothing that guarantees digtity and secures destiny apart from certainty, David Oyedepo (1999) Because there are more than one options, the possibility of collusion is inherent in the decision making process, which if not managed viciously, can cause the loss of of productive time and resources.
From my certainty determination I have now defined the problem as one, the unavailability of a working MySQL server.
